AM Wireless Computing: Sparking a new ''PC''
revolution David Cearley,
META Group Jack Gold, META Group |
The coming explosion of wireless technologies will enable whole
new classes of client devices linked into the computing network, and
transition users from personal computing to a new PC revolution:
Pervasive Computing. Broadband wireless access will greatly
expand markets by reaching new users, enabling new solutions, and
supporting new business models. However, this pervasive model also
requires significant infrastructure and application changes as well
as new user interface paradigms.
Vendors are rushing to join
this new revolution generating both exciting new products and
sometimes over zealous marketing hype. To avoid mistakes users must
keep in mind a realistic timeline for technology evolution and
carefully assess the opportunities.
This chair address will
provide a strategic business and technology model for exploiting
this new computing revolution.
What you will learn
· What are the fundamental pervasive computing technologies and
how will they evolve over the next 5-10 years? · Which
applications and technologies should be selected for their tactical
value, and which need to be strategic investments? · What impact
will wireless pervasive computing have on the way consumers and
business users exploit technology? · How will consumer usage and
expectations be changed by the inevitable migration to anytime,
anywhere computing? · How does pervasive computing and e-business
come together to offer new opportunities for corporate B2B and B2C
applications?

AM The Mobile and Pervasive
Premium Jack Gold, META
Group |
Just as IT organizations are finally experiencing the benefits of
a managed PC/desktop environment with defined services,
standardization, and charge-back; they are faced with implementing
the same cost control and manageability programs in the rapidly
expanding mobile and pervasive computing world. To date, most Global
2000 (G2000) organizations have not implemented specific management
solutions for their mobile workforce let alone for their external
users (e.g. customers, suppliers, distributors) and for supporting
non-traditional notebook devices (e.g. handhelds, WAP-enabled cell
phones). To avoid repeating the tumultuous history of PC/desktop
evolution, IT organizations must lead this mobile and pervasive
revolution. Join us in a discussion of manageability imperatives,
cost assessments and overall best practices in supporting a mobile
and pervasive user base.
What you will learn
What does it cost to support a mobile and pervasive computing
environment? How can these costs be reduced through
effective containment strategies? Which management tools
and processes are required to support a mobile user?
